Novis vs Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM)
Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook in July 2026. It is excellent at answering questions about your own sources, with citations, and it can make flashcards and quizzes from them. What it does not document is a review schedule: it does not plan which cards to see again on which day. That schedule is the core of Novis.
Pick Gemini Notebook if
- You mainly want to ask questions about a large set of readings and get cited answers.
- You like audio or video overviews of your material.
- You already pay for Google AI Pro, or want a large free tier.
Pick Novis if
- You need to remember the material on exam day, not only understand it today.
- You want each card reviewed on an FSRS schedule that stops before your exam date.
- You want to explain a concept back and be graded, and to move decks to and from Anki.

Switching from Gemini Notebook
- Keep using Gemini Notebook to read and ask questions. The two work well together.
- Upload the same PDF or slides to Novis to make cards you will review on a schedule, or import the CSV of flashcards you exported from Gemini Notebook as pasted text.
- Add your exam date so the reviews are planned to land before it.
Questions
Is NotebookLM the same as Gemini Notebook?
Yes. Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook in July 2026, and notebooklm.google now redirects to notebook.google.
Does Gemini Notebook have spaced repetition?
Google's help pages describe flashcards you mark Got it or Missed it and can re-practice, but no spaced repetition schedule that spreads reviews over days. Novis schedules every card with FSRS.
Can I use both?
Yes. Use Gemini Notebook to understand a reading and Novis to remember it until the exam. Flashcards exported from Gemini Notebook as CSV can be pasted into Novis.
